About Our Speakers & Their Topics

Michael Covert: Founder and general manager of Covert Consulting, a regional IT consulting firm specializing in IT Management, Technical Architecture, and the usage of advanced analytics in a business environment.

Topic: Big Data Solutions

The age of Big Data is upon us. As data volumes have grown to multi-terabyte, petabyte, and soon exabyte proportions, we naturally want to explore this wealth of data to derive understanding that can yield insights into customers, suppliers, products, competitors – the usual suspects pertaining to your business. But how does one manage this data explosion, prepare it for analysis, and then produce analytical results in a manner that is scalable, cost-effective, and ultimately can be easily used?

The emerging answers come from Big Data solutions that are the outgrowth of Web-scale analytics. But, what exactly are these solutions? Who supports them? How much investment is required, and how probable is it that we will be successful with them? What synergies exist with the movement to the Cloud? How do these technologies differ from our familiar RDBMS systems, and what’s with this NoSQL thing anyway?

In this session we will discuss many details of this newly emerging area of data management and analytics. We will cover:

  • The origins, history, and design of Big Data solutions
    • Ancient history
    • Modern history
